Restricted Items

15 February 2007
Air New Zealand wishes to advise that due to heightened security measures introduced by Aviation Authorities, it has been necessary to put in place restrictions on certain items that are no longer permitted to be carried as part of a customer's cabin baggage.

To avoid any possible inconvenience to our customers, it is important certain items are packed in your checked in baggage. Should a customer try to carry these types of items in their cabin baggage or on their person, the airport screening services will remove them and regrettably such items will not be able to be returned to the customer.

On 15 February the New Zealand Government announced additional security measures to carry-on luggage.

From 31 March 2007 passengers departing New Zealand on an international flight will have to comply with new security regulations when hand-carrying liquids, gels and aerosols.

The new measures are:

  • All liquids, aerosols or gels such as drinks, creams, perfumes, sprays, gels, toothpaste, lip gloss and mascaras must be in individual containers not greater than 100ml in volume
  • All containers must be carried in a re-sealable transparent plastic bag no larger than one litre (approximately 20cm x 20cm or 8 inches x 8 inches)
  • Only one bag is permitted per passenger
  • The plastic bag must be sealed and presented separately from all other carry-on baggage at the screening point
  • Liquids in containers of more than 100mls can be packed in your checked in baggage.

There are exemptions for personal medications, baby products and dietary supplements in liquid, aerosol or gel form.

The new security regulation is consistent with that already in place in the USA, European Community and Canada.  It is also consistent with the security regulation being introduced in Australia from 31 March 2007.

For more information on the new regulation including what items are permitted please visit: http://www.flysmart.govt.nz/

Other items prohibited on board aircraft, in your cabin baggage or on your person, include:

  • Sharp objects or cutting implements including (but not limited to): knives, box cutters, letter openers, scissors, tradesman's tools, screwdrivers, darts and knitting needles
  • Sporting goods or club like items including (but not limited to): baseball bats, pool cues, golf clubs, lacrosse sticks, ski poles, brass knuckles, hammers, boomerangs and didgeridoos
  • Lighters including butane, absorbed-fuel (Zippo type), battery powered and novelty lighters

In respect of any medication a customer may be carrying in their cabin baggage or on their person, it is important that the medication has a professionally printed label identifying the medication or manufacturers name or pharmaceutical label affixed. Diabetes related supplies/equipment may be carried, however they will be inspected to ensure prohibited items are not concealed. Customers are advised to carry a letter from their Doctor verifying the need for any medical items to be carried, as some countries require such a letter to be presented.

Should you have any questions in relation to restricted items please contact your nearest Air New Zealand Travelcentre or Air New Zealand Reservations office.
